Description

Available in photocopy version only.

Although thermistors have been manufactured commercially for more than thirty years and throughout the world some 200,000,000 devices are produced and sold annually, rather surprisingly no authoritative reference work on the subject exists. The purpose of this book is therefore to fill this void in the literature by systematically dealing with every aspect of the technology involved in the preparation and use of all known forms of thermistor.

Thermistors fall naturally into two categories which are separated according to the sign (negative or positive) of their temperature coefficient and as such this book follows this natural division. In the first three chapters negative temperature coefficient (NTC) devices are dealt with in respect to their history, material behaviour and electrical conductivity mechanism; the method of manufacture to disc, rod, film and bead forms of construction and their electrical characteristics and properties. Applications of these NTC devices for temperature measurement, control and compensation; for operation in a self-heated mode and for some specialised fields of use are described in Chapters 4 to 6, while Chapter 7 is devoted to the applications of indirectly heated forms of NTC thermistor. High temperature and specialised forms of device are the subject of Chapter 8.

In the second part of the book all aspects of the preparation and use of PTC devices made from elemental materials (germanium and silicon) are described in Chapter 9. The more conventional switching PTC thermistors are covered in a similar manner to that used for NTC types under history and material fundamental properties (Chapter 10), device preparation and properties (Chapter 11) and applications (Chapter 12). The book ends with an invaluable component selection guide to enable a potential user to select the most suitable form of NTC or PTC thermistor for a particular application, together with a worldwide list of device manufacturers.

Some Worldwide Reviews

"Thermistors have thousands of uses. They have been produced for over 30 years and around 200,000,000 devices are used annually - yet, surprisingly, there has been no authoritative reference work on the subject. This book aims to fill this gap by dealing systematically with every aspect of the technology involved in the preparation and use of all known forms of thermistor. There are 13 chapters, covering materials and fundamental properties, the characteristics of the various types - those with negative temperature coefficients which are used for switching purposes - and the varied applications.

The book is well illustrated and easy to read, and for those designers not working in this area it is virtually an education."

The Engineering Designer (UK)

"...this book will be invaluable to any workers regularly using thermistors and should find a place in any technical library."
