PHOTONIC SWITCHING AND INTERCONNECT

Presented by Peter Healey

Running Time: 0.5 hours

ADVANCED APPLICATIONS AND MATERIALS

Code: EP118

Description

The lecture addresses techniques to deal with a potential bottleneck to provide sufficient processing power at the nodes of optical links. The video illustrates a typical telecommunications switching service hierarchy and develops the theme of increasing capacity which lead to congestion and losses in interconnection in electronic switches and has to be met by photonic switching. Hence: dispersionless and lossless transmission, and zero crosstalk. Hence the multi-dimensional optical network (MONET) using 3 degrees of freedom of interconnect, using optical interconnect on the circuit cards and the backplane. Wavelength mux and demux functions are included. A sample calculation indicates a switching capacity between 9.6 and 614 GBit/s. Implementation technologies include D-fibre bus backplane, erbium doped fibre amplifier to overcome losses and fast switching upgrade from LiNbO3 to array integration of MONET WDM transmitter unit and SDM/WDM receiver switches. Hence "born in optics" provides a generic technological solution for both transmission and switching.
